The Challenge

Merrimac SHS excels in STEAM, robotics, and innovation programs, collaborating on outreach projects with local universities and state schools. Students actively participate in national and international competitions. An old building, previously used for staff and specialist spaces, was chosen to house a dedicated STEAM and robotics centre, emphasising the school’s commitment to these fields.

The Solution

The building named “The Spark” provided two main areas: a maker space and a robotics space.

The maker’s space provided state-of-the-art equipment for innovation, including CNC machines, 3D printers/scanners, laser cutters and soldering machines.

The robotics space provided a larger floor space for robotics testing/competition, componentry, virtual reality and indoor drone piloting.

Each space used different materials and fabrics to create industrial and creative versus clean precision spaces. This was a fascinating and collaborative project driven by the school’s vision and enthusiasm for a facility to meet the demands of 21st-century learning and technology.
