The Challenge
This project’s challenge was to provide much-needed upgrades to the school’s existing Home Economics Kitchen and create a functional space to deliver certifier skills training and curriculum at Nambour State College.
The existing building was riddled with asbestos and outdated infrastructure that was end of life and required replacement. We also had to include a centralised exhaust extraction system plus a low-level overhead slab to the level above. The school required continuation of curriculum delivery in all classrooms, both above and adjacent to the existing home economics kitchen, and limited noise trades to allocated times during the working day.
The Solution
Providing a fit-for-purpose, certified-skill hospitality kitchen for students, including those with disabilities, can be challenging. However, success is in the details and often requires us to go beyond the brief and ensure specific information is scrutinised to guarantee the end users’ required outcome.
It was necessary to work closely with the specialist staff and school leadership teams to ensure the school’s requirements were considered and met. Communication was vital in ensuring the school was updated daily with the proposed programme to maintain coordination with noisy trade works.
